2011-03-10 Malcolm B... Having taken a leap of faith and purchased the Tarantula, I thought I'd give you some feed back on the product. I'm going to be as honest as I can about this product but I hope you will all forgive me if I come across a little vague. This is simply to protect "the secret" of the Tarantula.

The leap I speak of refers to the cost. My initial thoughts when considering whether to buy it or not were of value for money. It is, after all, £60. Would it live up to my expectations for £60 or, upon receipt, would I feel as though, like with so many illusions on the market, that my money had gone on something that did not satisfy product to value ratio?.
The answer is quite simple. It did.

I made a point of watching the enclosed and included video BEFORE I opened the small box containing the gimmick, and it is a very small box indeed!. The video is well laid out. I watched the Tarantula's creator, Yigal Mesika perform 4 routines and in all honesty I can say his presentation of the effects, quite literally, blew me away. I scrutinised the performances over an over, rewinding and watching again and again. I could not see how he was pulling it off and believe me I was looking. Then it became time for Yigal to let me in on the secret. As he explained the intricacies of the Tarantula, it's workings and how it is made, I opened my box. I was surprised by the work, thought & craftsmanship that had gone into the gimmick. Yigal had covered every base.

So there I was stood in front of my television mirroring his movements as a student mirrors his tutor. Naturally, and to my frustration, the first few attempts at the more complex of the four illusions went awry but with my trusty TV remote in hand it was simply a case of rewind and play, rewind and play.

Eventually, within a few hours I had it. My performance was no where near as polished as Yigal's but at the very least I was mirroring his moves and accomplishing the effect, but more to the point, this was with the more complex (and incredulous) of the 4 illusions included in the package.

Two of the 4 effects are very very easy to master, the other two take a little more time, patience and dedicated practice but just so as you know, within 3 weeks of first picking up the Tarantula I was performing all 4 of them live as part of my routines in the clubs and pubs of my home town. Nobody caught me out, which is the obvious fear for any magician performing a new effect in front of the crowds, and in fact, taking Yigal's advice which I gave myself as a mantra, "You gotta just forget about it and focus on the magic". He is so right, once you forget about the Tarantula and let it become an extension of you your audience will be so wrapped up in your performance that, even when the Tarantula is right under their noses, they just will not see it. You don't draw attention to it unless your confidence is not the level that it should be. Your confidence using the Tarantula, if you put in the time and practice grows by the hour, not by the day or the week but by the hour. It really is an amazing product that, once mastered, will give you the power to add emotional content to your performance and by that I mean you can actually feel the electrical charge coming from your audience and your subject when you complete the routine. When you see the look of amazement on your subjects face when a ring drops, after levitating for a few minutes in mid air onto her/his wedding finger, you will know exactly what I am talking about. It is a heart stopping moment for your subject, and believe it or not, for you too.

So, in closing, was this product worth £60?. Oh God yes. Was it easy to master, yes but your presentation is only as good as the time you put in. Take on board the tutorial from Yigal and you really can't go far wrong. The Tarantula has now become a part of me and part of my performance but not only that it is now the main part of my show openings, and one of the more gasp worthy parts of the finale.

If I had to find one criticism, it would be hard to do but it would be that with all the practice (and error) in my first few weeks, I found myself on the phone to Magic by Post enquiring after some of the consumables related to the Tarantula. So my advice to those thinking of buying this product, do it. You will not be disappointed but the moment it arrives and you set to work practising, put in an order for the consumable product that goes hand in hand (pardon the pun) with the Tarantula. This way you will avoid the disappointment of having to wait for the replacement consumables, that you may have used up in your practice, and you can head straight out and wow the audiences without delay. Believe me when I say this, once you've got this little baby mastered, you'll want to perform it time and time again.

I hope you all have as much fun mastering and using the Tarantula as I have. Thanks Yigal and thanks Magic by Post
